Sealants

In addition to good oral hygiene, including brushing and flossing, sealants are a great way to help protect against tooth decay causing bacteria and cavities on your child's back teeth (molars). These are the teeth that are most vulnerable to cavities and decay because they are used in the chewing process, are the most difficult to reach and clean, and often have deep grooves that can trap food and bacteria. Molars first erupt at around 5-7 years of age, with a second set coming in between the ages of 11-14. It is best to have a sealant placed soon after the molars come in to ensure they are protected early.

Placing a sealant is a simple process. First, the surface of the tooth is roughened and cleaned, the tooth is then prepared for bonding of the sealant. The sealant is then placed to seal the grooves. A special curing light is used to harden the sealant. The sealant creates a barrier between the tooth and plaque, food particles, and bacteria. Sealants will be checked regularly at check-up and cleaning appointments to ensure a proper seal. They can be reapplied if necessary. Choosing to seal your child's teeth will help keep their smile strong, healthy and protected!
